Dr Graeme MacDougal
Dr Graeme MacDougal is a Sub Specialist Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon who has private practice consulting rooms in Mona Vale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. As of 2019, Dr MacDougal will no longer be seeing new patients. He will continue to treat all current patients through to the end of their rehabilitation.

Dr MacDougal has operated in the field of Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgery since 1996.

Training


  • 1979 – Graduated from Sydney University, MBBS
  • 1982 – General Practice in Mona Vale, Dip RACOG, Dip of Sports Medicine.
  • 1992 – Orthopaedic Training Program Sydney (Northside)
  • 1996 – Completed Specialist Orthopaedic training (FRACS).
  • 1997 – Shoulder and Elbow fellowship Sydney
After completing his Medical Degree, Dr MacDougal spent eight years in general practice in Mona Vale and developed a strong sports medicine focus. During this time his local community involvement included roles as the club Doctor for Warringah Rugby Club 7 years, Warriewood Surf Lifesaving Club and three seasons at the NSW Waratahs as team Physician.

As his interest in sports medicine grew he decided to retrain in Orthopaedic surgery and was successful in being admitted to the Orthopaedic training program in 1992. Dr MacDougal completed his Specialist Orthopaedic training in 1996 and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) 1997 and subsequently the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and Shoulder and Elbow society of Australia (SESA)

In 1997 he completed a post graduate fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery with Professor David Sonnabend and Dr Jeffrey Hughes, subsequently joining their practice on the lower North Shore.

In 2001 Dr MacDougal set up a solo private practice on the Northern Beaches and lower North Shore of Sydney, treating the full spectrum of Shoulder disorders.

Dr MacDougal has developed advanced skills in Arthroscopic Reconstructive surgery to compliment the traditional open surgical techniques. He also has a keen interest in joint replacement surgery of the shoulder.

Participation in continuing education including visitations to overseas shoulder units, conferences and active membership of the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia (SESA) have ensured ongoing development of knowledge and skills to achieve "best practice advice" and quality outcomes for patients.

Dr MacDougal offers balanced and individualised care, utilising his consulting experience and knowledge to identify those patients who may most benefit from surgical intervention. His broad based training allows him to also recognise the value of quality non operative treatments in the practice of shoulder and elbow surgery.

He continues to be an active contributor to the research and development of Shoulder and Elbow surgery with ongoing research, presentations and publications, specifically regarding Rotator cuff repair.

  • Rotator Cuff Repair
  • Shoulder reconstruction for dislocating and unstable shoulders
  • Shoulder Replacement surgery including Reverse and traditional Total Shoulder replacement for Arthritic conditions of the Shoulder
In addition to his private practice Dr MacDougal is Workcover accredited. He is available for Permanent Impairment assessments and Medico-legal reports on patients he is currently treating as well as second opinions and reports for third party related Shoulder and elbow injuries.

Hospital Appointments


Dr MacDougal has operating rights at North Shore Private Hospital at St Leonards, where he is currently joint Head of the Orthopaedic Department.

He also has operating rights at Mater Private Hospital and Mater Orthopaedic Day Surgery at Crows Nest and the new Northern Beaches Hospital.

Affiliations


Dr MacDougal is an active member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, (AOA), Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS), and the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia (SESA), having held committee positions in all three organisations during his career. He is also a member of the Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ASOS), the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and is a registered Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).

Dr MacDougal has lived on the Northern Beaches since 1971 and continues to contribute to the local community serving on the Board of Mona Vale Golf Club since 2007, with a term as President from 2011-2014. He is also a member of the Friends of Warringah, Warringah Rugby Club and is a supporter of Surf Life Saving Australia and the Steve Waugh Charitable Foundation.
